Trashcan Header

instructions for students and youth

1. TELL YOUR PARENTS ABOUT TCMD
Be sure to tell your parents about “A Trashcan Can Make a Difference” (TCMD) and why you would like to participate. Your parents may read more about the project by visiting www.just4one.org. Invite them to partner with you in this effort.

2. CONTACT YOUR TEACHER OR SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR
Share your desire for TCMD with your teacher. Your teacher will most likely direct you to a school administrator (Principal, Vice Principal, Secretary, etc.). Ask for permission to bring TCMD to your school.

3. GET FRIENDS INVOLVED
Gather a couple of friends to help you with TCMD. Be sure to share why you think this project is important.

4. GET THE TRASHCAN
You’ll need to purchase a 10 gallon Trashcan (or larger), or recycle an old one.

5. APPLY THE STICKER
Apply the sticker to the Trashcan and place it in a visible area in your school or classroom.

6. REGISTER YOUR TRASHCAN
Please register your Trashcan online at register.just4one.org. Registering your Trashcan will allow you to connect with hundreds of others in this effort and receive regular updates from TCMD and other agencies in your area.

7. TRASHCAN FOR THE CITY / PARTNERSHIP AND CALENDAR
After registering your Trashcan, make contact with local organizations, social agencies, shelters, and/or food banks in your city or area. Find out what the agencies in your area have need of currently, as well as what they may require in the foreseeable future (food, toiletries, etc.). Download a customizable TCMD calendar so that others who join the Trashcan efforts in your school will have a guideline of participation.

8. FILL IT UP
Fill the trashcan with NEW ITEMS, not old or used stuff. Fill it according to the items requested by the agencies you’ve made contact with. We’ve found it helpful to focus on one theme at a time (i.e. school supplies, canned foods, baby goods, etc.).

9. DROP IT OFF
When the month has ended (or earlier if the Trashcan is full), place the items in a box or bag and take them to the agency or organization you have partnered with.

10. REPEAT
Please note the needs for the next month and repeat the cycle.
